AMA Recap: CRYPTO MINERS x CENSO

Censo is a Seed Phrase Manager, aimed at ensuring the safety of individuals’ most valuable digital records, particularly seed phrases used in cryptocurrency wallets. It employs a security approach that involves splitting the seed phrase among trusted approvers. This distributed approach, along with encryption, ensures that no single entity has access to the complete seed phrase. Censo emphasizes the privacy and anonymity of users while no personal identifying information is collected, and the identities of the trusted approvers remain private. The system is designed to ensure that even the chosen approvers cannot access or read any part of the seed phrase. Only the user has complete control over their seed phrase and crypto assets. Censo’s goal is to provide users with confidence and control over their digital assets and identities.

We hosted an AMA session with Censo on 5th December.

So first of all we can start with your introduction?

Chace:
Sure! So clearly my name is Chace! I am a marketing manager for Censo and have been in the crypto space for about 6 years now. Previously I was a marketing manager for CertiK prior to joining the Censo team

All around degen like everyone else here, which makes me good at knowing what the people want and need, which is what we’re building at Censo

1. Could you make a brief introduction about Censo? What is your vision behind the project?

Chace:
So to date, over $300 billion has been lost due to lost, mismanaged, or forgotten seed phrases. This is A LOT more than what has been lost to hacks and exploits, but yet thats what everyone seems focued on.

Current seed-phrase storage methods, whether written on paper or digitally on the cloud, are plagued with vulnerabilities. They are all insecure and unreliable. We figured there is a problem here and set out to solve it.

Our mission is to help crypto wallet users navigate the complexities and anxieties of seed phrase security with confidence using a secure & private seed phrase manager. Censo is the only Seed Phrase Manager out there. It allows you to securely manage, store, and access your seed phrases, eliminating the stress associated with safekeeping seed phrases.

Especially if you’re like me and have multiple wallets across solana, eth, cosmos, etc.. it becomes a bit much to handle and manage.. and the last thing you want is to lose it and all your hard earned money is gone

So that is what we have built and the problem we are solving

2. What are the main features and services of Censo that makes it special as comparing it’s competitors?

Chace:
and everyone just continues with the current methods like nothing is wrong! its a bit crazy…

Sure, so currently our only competitor right now is the classic pen and paper storage method.. But as we all know that isnt sufficient when dealing with access to your money..

Chace:
Some of our “features” include: the most robust level of seed phrase security around, protects your privacy, puts you in complete charge, and ensures your independence. So, you’ll never have to worry about losing access to your crypto ever again.

Censo is an app that users download on their phones and you can store as many seed phrases as you would like on it

Nobody has any access, including Censo. And it leaves you in charge of your seed phrases

It is a category creating company because we are the first ones to do it

3. What specific security measures does Censo implement to safeguard users seed phrases from unauthorized access?

Chace:
Your seed phrase is split and encrypted (secretly coded to an unreadable format). These portions of your seed phrase, which are distributed to your trusted approvers, are of no use on their own. However, at your request, and yours alone, they can be recombined securely to your whole seed phrase. Remember, no one, including your trusted approvers and Censo, can access nor read any part of your seed phrase — not even a single word.

All encryption takes place in your mobile device, using proven cryptographic methods. Cryptography is like a secret code that keeps sensitive information safe. Here, it converts seed phrases into a jumbled-up form that is practically impossible to unscramble.

Censo holds no personal information nor unencrypted material. In the unlikely event that Censo was hacked, your security would not be compromised. Ever.

We are also currently finalizing an external audit that is available on our Github and all our code is open source!

4. How has the experience and background of your team been effective in the success of your project so far?

Chace:
So we are still a pretty small team, but a great team, at Censo! The experience in the leadership team that has launched and started several companies helps a lot.

We also have a team that is very knowledgeable about the crypto space and knows what the crypto users value most, security, privacy, and censorship-resistant.

For myself, previously working in the security industry has helped us ask all the questions and concerns that users may have and make sure they are at ease

5. What Censo achieved so far and What important updates and developments can we expect in the future?

We have a ton of cool features coming in the future but our goal right now is to be fully live by the end of the year!

My current goal is to just get the message out there to users and make sure they know they dont have to rely solely on a piece of paper where they wrote down their seed phrase and that there are better options available.

Our feedback has been great from users who have used it so far and we are very happy with it

1. Would it be possible for users to recover their seed phrases stored on @Censo_Inc in cases of misplaced/stolen phones used for this storage? Can you walk us through the recovery steps and procedures on how users can achieve this?

Chace:
So there would be no “recover” needed. You can use the app, sign up, input your seed phrases, and delete the app or get a new phone! All you need to do is redownload the app and log in again.

Censo uses a special facial recognition technology that includes a liveness test that cannot be tricked with photos or videos. This, combined with other factors of authentication including your Apple or Google ID and your trusted approvers, ensures that you are who you say you are, giving you sole control of your seed phrase.

Even if your phone was stolen, they could not access the Censo app

Censo even works completely offline with no internet connection needed

2. How user-friendly is Censo for someone new to crypto? How do you simplify complex concepts like seed phrases for users unfamiliar with the crypto space?

Chace:
So this was a very important aspect for us, as we see seed phrases as one of the biggest worries and hurdles to “mass adoption”. Most people dont want to deal with a 12 word phrase that if they lose, they lose their money.

So we made Censo so simple that even our grandparents could use it! We like to say if you can operate the Uber app, you can operate Censo.

It is a very streamlined and simple process, as it should be.

1) Defne:
How does Censo navigate these legal hurdles and ensure users in such regions can safely store and access their crypto without fear of seizure or legal repercussions?

Chace:
So one main pillar of Censo is Censorship resitant. At Censo, WE KNOW NOTHING about the user, which means we have nothing to give up to anyone. We collect no names, no email, nothing.

So no 3rd parties, gov’ts, or anyone can access your information because nobody has access except you, the user

2) Nazli:
By centralizing seed phrase management, Censo arguably shifts responsibility from users to your platform. Does this disproportionately burden Censo with ethical dilemmas, like deciding who deserves access to frozen assets or inherited crypto?

Chace:
So this is a common misconception because it is not centralized at all. Censo is YOUR seed phrase manager. Everyone deserves access to crypto.

The responsibility is still on the user. Censo is just a place to store your seed phrase to make sure you dont lose it

3) APE Crypto:
🟣 The concept of trusted approvers is intriguing. How do these individuals play a role in securing seed phrases, and how does one choose them?

Chace:
Trusted approvers are people you trust most in the world such as a loved one (family or close friends), that you choose to hold a portion of your encrypted seed phrase (a secretly coded portion). Having them gives you an added layer of security. But this is not mandatory.

When you want to access your seed phrase, they receive a code which is then given to you to input in the app. I like to say its a real life 2FA for example.

You can choose to not have any and have sole access whenever you want it, or to have Trust Approvers for a 2nd layer of protection. The choice is yours!

they are your trusted back up for your secret seed phrase in case you ever lose it, so that you can easily access your crypto one day when you need it most.

You just set it and forget it, and hopefully will never have to bother them to retrieve your seed phrase
