Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a distributed, open, and extensible naming system based on the Ethereum blockchain. ENS’s job is to map human-readable names like ‘alice.eth’ to machine-readable identifiers such as Ethereum addresses, other cryptocurrency addresses, content hashes, and metadata. ENS also supports ‘reverse resolution’, making it possible to associate metadata such as canonical names or interface descriptions with Ethereum addresses. ENS has similar goals to DNS, the Internet’s Domain Name Service, but has significantly different architecture due to the capabilities and constraints provided by the Ethereum blockchain. Like DNS, ENS operates on a system of dot-separated hierarchical names called domains, with the owner of a domain having full control over subdomains. ENS is deployed on the Ethereum main network and on several test networks. If you use a library such as the ensjs JavaScript library, or an end-user application, it will automatically detect the network you are interacting with and use the ENS deployment on that network. Ethereum Name Service has a one-of-a-kind value proposition due to being the first service that transfers the Domain Name Service to the decentralized Web3. ENS is not a company but an open-source project that calls itself “an open public utility that belongs to the company.” Essentially, it aims to become a piece of infrastructure as vital to Web3 as the DNS is to the internet. Moreover, ENS does not have a single point of failure thanks to blockchain technology and is, by design, more censorship-resistant and secure.

We hosted an AMA session with EMD Domains on 6th October.

Mr. Ramsy was the host from Crypto Miners and Miss Alisha was the guest. She shared with us the features and functions of ENS Domains.
.
Segment 1️⃣: Introduction

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
Hello everyone 👋 Welcome to Our Another #Special AMA session With ENS Domains

To help us learn more about ENS Domains, We are lucky to be joined By Miss Alisha

alisha.eth:
hi 👋

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
Hello there 👋

Welcome here

Thanks for joining with us today ❤️

alisha.eth:
excited to share more about ENS :)

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
Great 👌

First of all Can You Introduce Yourself To us?

alisha.eth:
sure, I’m alisha.eth, I’m on the team at True Names, the developers of the ENS protocol. My role is around governance, community, and growth. I spend most of my time lately helping build out infrastructure in the ENS DAO

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
Glad to have you today Alisha 🤝

Now let’s start our First part of the session

1. Please make a concise and brief introduction about ENS Domains.

alisha.eth:
ENS is the Ethereum Name Service. ENS is a naming system that creates domain names on the Ethereum blockchain. ENS names are domains, NFTs, and can act as an username for your digital identity across the internet.

ENS was founded in 2017 by Nick Johnson (nick.eth), an alumni of the Ethereum Foundation and ex-Googler. In the past 5 years, over 2.5m ENS names have been registered.

There are three main use cases for ENS names today. Each use case can be mapped to a different capability of your Ethereum account.

1. Human-readable name for your Ethereum account
2. Censorship-resistant domain name
3. Portable web3 username

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
Thanks Alisha for this well start

2) Tell us features of ENS Domains that makes it superior and special as compared to its competitors?

alisha.eth:
ENS was created as a public good, not a company. This is very very important in terms of the competitive/unfair advantage that ENS has as over competitors who are in most cases companies, that have investors. Where a company must always serve it’s investors, ENS has no investors, all of the registration fees go to the DAO treasury, and now those funds are used to continue to develop the protocol, but MOST IMPORTANTLY as the core team, our only duty it to build in the best interest of the protocol, and to serve the users of ENS, building it out as a credibly neutral piece of infrastructure that is vital not only to Ethereum, but the internet.

Also, I would say that the founder of ENS, nick.eth, is the originator of features and code that very few other devs could compete with. Anyone can fork ENS, or copy and paste, but ENS will always be the originator when it comes to naming systems.

Oh, I would also say another huge advantage of ENS is that it is DNS compatible, you can integrate a .com, .xyz, .org etc into ENS. Other naming systems are blockchain based and trying to create their own silo.

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
Cool

3. How a domain at ENS works and what did it show? What a user can do with the domain?

alisha.eth:
An ENS name works by mapping a human-readable name, like ‘alice.eth’ to a machine readable identifier, like an Ethereum address.

Instead of using your wallet address to request payments etc, you can register a .eth (at app.ens.domains) and resolve that name to your Ethereum address. This way, in Metamask for example, you can type in ‘alice.eth’ rather than the long 0x…. address.

You can add any key/value data to an ENS name. This means it can also become your social profile of sorts. This will be more obvious over coming months when we make some updates to our website.

here is an example of all the information I have mapped to my ENS name, alisha.eth.

You can also use your .eth to host a decentralized website. For example, if you type ‘vitalik.eth’ into Brave, it will go to his blog. Or on chrome, you can use a gateway like ‘vitalik.eth.limo’.

No one can take your .eth name away from you if you are the registrant. Not the team, not the ENS DAO, not anyone else.

feel free to ask more questions or reframe, since there is so much info.

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
Note that guys 😇

4. How is the platform secured? What are the security measures?

alisha.eth:
.eth names are locked and cannot be changed by the root (currently held in a 7 person multisig, and will eventually be transitioned to the DAO). Sovereignty over your .eth name is an important aspect of ENS, and is part of the ENS DAO constitution.

I guess security means a different thing here, normally it’s about money, but for ENS, it’s security of the .eth domain.

In terms of DAO funds, all fees go to the DAO treasury and can only be distributed by an executable proposal being approved by the DAO. No individual or team controls the funds.

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
5. Now tell us about the native coin $ENS, what are its usecases and utilities in ENS Domains ecosystem?

alisha.eth:
The only utility of $ENS is to participate in governance, within the ENS DAO, to manage the governance of the protocol, and vote on treasury distributions.

That’s it. No utility. No incentives. 1 $ENS = 1 vote in the DAO.

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
Lastly, what important updates and developments we’ll get in coming months and years in ENS Domains ecosystem?

alisha.eth:
the NameWrapper is a really really big deal and just got launched to test net, and will hopefully be live by the end of November. This allows .eth holders to issue subdomains that are NFTs just like second-level .eth names (like alisha.eth).

At the moment, you can go to opensea or ens.vision, and buy ENS names like alisha.eth or cryptonative.eth. Subdomains are free to create and will unlock huge potential in terms of use cases, for communities just like this, and companies. Coinbase already used another feature we shipped not long ago to issue cb.id subdomains to its users.

Subdomains are a really big deal, and we believe this will go a long way in onboarding millions of users at a time to ENS.

As well as that, we are also improving the experience of integrating DNS names into ENS, so this will also get easier and will hopefully be gasless in the future. Again, a huge onboarding opportunity because anyone in web2, on the internet, with a .com, .org etc, can integrate easily into ENS

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
Thanks Alisha for this well detailed introduction about ENS Domains

And that’s the wrap up of our the first part of the AMA session ✅

Let’s now proceed to our Twitter Questions section

Shall we Alisha?

alisha.eth:
sure sounds good

Segment 2️⃣: Twitter Questions

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
1.Could you please give us more information regarding the DevCon event coming up? Is anyone eligible to join this event? What are the requirements for participation in this event? Do we need to sign up or get a ticket?

alisha.eth:
My understanding is that you do need a ticket to attend DevCon, and these needed to be purchased prior to the event. On the bright side, DevCon will likely be streaming all of the talks. There are 2 members from my team giving talks, Matoken.eth and Nick.eth. I’m not sure of the time/schedule atm.

(we will def tweet about it from the main twitter account, @ensdomains)

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
2.You say: use your ENS name to store all your addresses and receive payments in any cryptocurrency.” Can you explain the mechanism of connecting the ENS to our cryptocurrency wallet to make it easier to share the public address? Is it really easy to buy our own domain?

alisha.eth:
Here is a link on info with how to register a name. https://learndocs.xyz/docs/getting-started/Registering%20Names

It’s really easy to add other crypto addresses to your ENS name in the Manager, at app.ens.domains. This works because your .eth name maps to each address.

This is esp great for people who aren’t into Ethereum. You can integrate yourname.cash into ENS, and set a BTC address. This way, you still get a human readable ENS name, and people can type yourname.eth into Metamask and it will send the BTC to your BTC address listed in your ENS records

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
3.Obviously, people see domain names as gems and buy domain names from famous brands and individuals. Do you think domain names are that valuable? So, do famous companies show interest in domain names?

alisha.eth:
Yes, brands and companies that are experimenting with web3 are interested in their .eth names. Because we are so early, I think that there is a lot of hype around .eth names being crypto native, and native to ENS. In the future, I think more and more brands and individuals who have established .coms will integrate that domain into ENS if they can’t acquire their .eth name for a reasonable price.

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
That’s the wind up of our twitter segment

alisha.eth:
great, thanks for having me

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
Now Moving on to our last segment — Live Q&A

Segment 3️⃣: Live QnA
(In this segment group was opened for 60 seconds and Miners sent hundreds of questions. Guest choose some best to answer)

1) Monsoon:
Since there are many other domain platforms, Why should someone choose you?

alisha.eth:
You don’t have to choose .eth, you can choose any one of the many many DNS top level domains (TLDs) like .com, .lol, .info, .wtf, whatever you want, and integrate those too.

Why choose ENS’s .eth for blockchain domains? because there isn’t the risk of name collisions which other blockchain naming systems have.

2) Itz Abhi ⚡️ ️️️️️️:
How can I get abhi, eth ? Its reserved

alisha.eth:
Names aren’t reserved. It’s either registered by someone else, in which case, you have to make an offer somewhere like opensea, or it’s available to be registered.

3) 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘆:
What are the main plans for your project at the moment? Are you focusing on community marketing/exchange or products?

alisha.eth:
The core team is focusing on building out the protocol. There is still so much to be built, but we are now well on our way. I think on the marketing/onboarding front, we are lucky that we have the DAO to be able to utilize the community to help with that task, as well as what the core team does

4) Angel Fully:
What are some of the best features that benefit users on your platform?Where can I get all the latest news? Do you have a Twitter/Telegram/Discord community? If yes, can you share the link here as there are lots of fakes telegram/twitter groups?

alisha.eth:
The best account to follow is twitter.com/ensdomains. We don’t have an official telegram and you can join the discord here https://chat.ens.domains/

5) MÁÑÉ⚡️:
Are you afraid that some day another project with more innovative technology might replace your project?

alisha.eth:
No. If someone comes up with something more innovative, and it serves everyone that’s great. The goal for ENS isn’t profit maximization but to build a great and useful naming system.

6) Munna Bhaiya:
How can I register for Devcon? Can you tell me the things required to do the pre registration?

alisha.eth:
I don’t think you can get tickets now. They were on https://devcon.org/tickets/

7) Chukky:
To get started using ENS Domains, what do I need?

alisha.eth:
To get started you need a crypto wallet with some ETH. Then you can register at app.ens.domains

8) Saran:
How do the ENS Manager App and the Twitter bot know what names people are buying?

alisha.eth:
The bots can read straight from the contract. All registration info is public since names are registered on the Ethereum blockchain.

9) Evelyn:
With the market having less interest due to the end of the ETH merge event and the winter market, is there any benefit to getting ENS domain services?🧐

alisha.eth:
It’s not a bear market for ENS. We just had our highest ever month of registrations.

https://twitter.com/ensdomains/status/1576267739974422529/photo/1

10) Timmy ETH:
How can I get timmy .eth ? Its reserved

alisha.eth:
Names aren’t reserved. If it isn’t available, that means someone has registered it. You will need to make an offer, and maybe hope they accept it.

*This segment ends here*

Ramsy | Crypto Miners:
Thankyou So Much Alisha For your valuable answers and information about ENS Domains 💙

Time To Conclude Our AMA Section
